Cooltrax Expands Trailer Visibility with Globalstar Integrity 150
Background
For more than 20 years, Cooltrax® solutions has specialized in cold chain monitoring for grocery and food service fleets across North America. Its platform combines refrigeration unit data with wireless sensors to provide customers with comprehensive visibility into temperature, door events, product temperatures, and trailer conditions.
As customer fleets evolved, so did their requirements. Many operators manage both refrigerated and dry van trailers and desired the same level of visibility across their entire fleet through a single platform. While Cooltrax had established expertise in cellular-connected refrigerated trailers, tracking untethered, non-powered dry vans presented a new opportunity.
Challenge
Unlike refrigerated trailers, dry vans typically do not have an onboard power source to support traditional telematics devices. Customers wanted to know where every trailer was, whether refrigerated or dry, without switching between multiple applications or vendors.
For Cooltrax, this meant solving several challenges:
- Provide reliable asset tracking for non-powered trailers
- Maintain a single-pane-of-glass experience for customers managing mixed fleets
- Expand beyond cellular connectivity into satellite communications for the first time
- Deliver a scalable platform that could support additional sensor capabilities as customer needs evolved
The transition from cellular to satellite required significant technical integration. Satellite communications operate differently than high-frequency cellular data, requiring new approaches to connectivity, messaging, and system design. As an organization whose products had historically relied on cellular networks, moving into satellite represented a major technical shift.
At the same time, market demand for complete trailer visibility continues to grow. Industry analysts identify trailer tracking and location monitoring as the largest application within the trailer telematics market, driven by the need for improved asset utilization, cargo security, and operational efficiency. Cargo and condition monitoring is also expected to see strong growth as fleets increasingly combine location data with sensor information.
Solution
Cooltrax partnered with Globalstar to bring a new solution to market using the Globalstar Integrity 150.
The solar-powered, battery-operated device enabled reliable satellite tracking for non-powered assets without requiring an external power source. Bluetooth˚ connectivity also allowed the Integrity 150 to communicate with Cooltrax's existing sensor ecosystem, creating a foundation for much more than simple location tracking.
“It’s allowed us to be much more competitive,” said Brad Bartlett, Senior Vice President, Cooltrax Americas. “Our market wants one single pane of glass. The typical user doesn’t want to jump around disparate applications looking for information about their fleet.”
Making the jump from a purely cellular-driven application to satellite was a significant transition for Cooltrax.
Throughout development, Globalstar's engineering and technical teams worked closely with Cooltrax to navigate the complexities of satellite communications and refine the solution as new capabilities were introduced. The collaboration helped accelerate product development while ensuring the solution met the operational requirements of large commercial fleets.
“Globalstar has helped us expand the visibility we can provide across our customers’ diverse trailer fleets,” Bartlett said. “While Cooltrax specializes in monitoring refrigerated assets, many of our large grocery customers need visibility across their entire untethered fleet – including dry van trailers, dollies and generators. The entire Globalstar team has been extremely supportive in making sure we were successful.”
The result was a solution capable of tracking:
- Dry van trailers
- Dollies
- Refrigerated trailers
- Other non-powered fleet assets
And all of this is within the same Cooltrax platform customers already relied upon.
The partnership also positioned Cooltrax for future growth. While today's dry van deployments primarily focus on asset location and door monitoring, the Integrity 150 provides a pathway to introduce Bluetooth temperature sensors as customer requirements evolve. This future-ready architecture allows fleets to expand capabilities without replacing deployed hardware.
Results
By adding satellite-powered asset tracking to its platform, Cooltrax significantly expanded its addressable market while creating a differentiated offering for customers managing mixed trailer fleets.
Key outcomes include:
- Expanded trailer visibility: Customers can monitor both refrigerated and dry van trailers from a single portal instead of managing multiple tracking systems.
- Market differentiation: Combining satellite asset tracking with Bluetooth sensor capability creates a solution that goes beyond traditional "where is my trailer?" asset tracking.
- New product innovation: The Integrity 150 enabled Cooltrax to introduce a new dry trailer solution that complements its established cold chain portfolio.
- Successful satellite adoption: With support from Globalstar's technical team, Cooltrax successfully expanded from an exclusively cellular business into satellite-enabled asset tracking.
- Future-ready platform: Customers can begin with location and door visibility today while maintaining a clear path to add temperature monitoring and additional Bluetooth sensors as operational needs change.
The partnership reflects a broader shift in trailer telematics toward integrated visibility solutions. Bluetooth-enabled sensors continue to play an increasingly important role in providing real-time visibility into asset location, condition, and operational status across logistics operations, enabling fleets to improve efficiency, reduce asset loss, and strengthen supply chain resilience.
“We have something pretty special with Cooltrax and Globalstar,” Bartlett said. “Our sensor technology is what makes the solution unique. Anyone can track an asset, but when you combine reliable asset tracking with Bluetooth-enabled temperature and door sensors – powered by solar – you create a much more accessible, needed solution for an entire market.”
Rather than treating dry trailer tracking and cold chain monitoring as separate technologies, Cooltrax and Globalstar have created a scalable platform that allows fleets to manage powered and non-powered assets through one connected solution: meeting today's visibility needs while providing room to grow as customer requirements evolve.
